Android 3.0 Tablets ReviewArticle by Batterylaptops.co.uk
Dell CEO Michael Dell promises iPad-sized Android 3.0 tablets as soon as Google makes Honeycomb fully available.
Google earlier this week made available the Android 3.0 Preview SDK for developers planning to offer applications for upcoming Android 3.0 tablets. Google will also hold an official Android 3.0 event on February 2, which will be streamed live on youtube.com/android.
Dell is expected to be one of the key manufacturers of Android 3.0 tablets. BBC Editor Tim Weber reports via Twitter that Dell will indeed deliver the goods: "Michael Dell tells me that as soon as Android 3.0 Honeycomb is fully available, Dell will ship iPad-sized tablets."
It's an understatement to say that Dell and Apple are fierce competitors. For instance, Dell's new Mobility online store will offer Apple's worst enemies: Windows Phone 7, Android, and BlackBerry smartphones, as well as Android tablets. According to Tim Weber, Dell will soon also launch new Windows Phone 7 m odels.
The fact that Dell is planning to release a direct competitor to the iPad is the most intriguing information coming out of Davos this week. Powerful tablets optimized for capacitive touchscreens will have a significant impact on the tech economy in the years ahead. Apple and friends have been investing billions of dollars to get a head start.
Android 3.0 is a unique opportunity for players such as Dell and Asus to challenge Apple at a much earlier stage than what was the case when Apple introduced the iPhone. Microsoft works hard on Windows 8 with ARM architecture support and with a focus on Natural User Interfaces, but Android 3.0 comes exactly when Dell needs something new to push through its sales channels.
Apple COO Tim Cook said the following about iPad competitors during an earnings call recently:
"We're not sitting still. We have a huge first-mover advantage. And a huge user advantage from iTunes to the App Store. Huge number of apps and an ecosystem. We're very confident entering into a fight with anyone."
Apple's COO should indeed be confident, as every single iOS device out there has been a huge success. Furthermore, Apple last year acquired Intrinsity, a company that is capable of building application processors that are better than ARM's own designs.
However, within few years, possibly as soon as 2013, NVIDIA will release a new generation of Android-supported chips as part of a close cooperation with ARM. There's no point with new chips without strong partners, of course, and that's why a simple tweet coming out of Davos is so intriguing.
When the Dell founder embraces Android 3.0 and says iPad-sized tablets are on their way, it is a definitive sign of the beginning of yet another big battle between Dell and Apple. Because, as Michael Dell tweeted to Tim Weber: You can never be too connected!
